About The Event
Learn clay hand-building techniques in a relaxed studio environment. Over 5 weeks you will learn about clay types and applications, methods of forming including pinching, coiling, slab-building and kurinuki (carving) - to create a series of objects that are fired and functional. Suitable for beginners or those looking to develop their skills. Starts Monday and runs weekly from 6-8pm. This course is available in a flexible format - choose one technique or all five!
Week 1 : Pinch
Week 2 : Coil
Week 3 : Kurinuki (carve)
Week 4 : Slab
Week 5 : Glaze + Fire
Note: work from weeks 1-4 will be bisque fired in preparation for glazing in week 5

About the tutor:
Sachiko Mardon discovered the medium of ceramics (via mould-making and slip-casting) while studying for a Bachelor of Industrial Design (Hons. RMIT), and later completed a Master of Fine Arts (Ceramics: UTAS). She recently established Piecework Projects studio at Jack’s Magazine, offering makers space to develop their ceramics practice at all levels. Sachiko also teaches hand-building at the Incinerator Gallery and Connie Lichti Ceramics.

Week 1 : PINCH
Date: 2 March 2020 Time: Monday 6-8pm PINCH: Pinching is a fundamental hand-building technique. In this class we'll try different clay types and get a feeling of the material's limitations and possibilities!

Date: 9 March 2020 Time: Monday 6-8pm COIL: Coils can be hand formed or extruded, and the technique of coiling lends itself to making (infinitely) larger objects!

Date: 16 March 2020 Time: Monday 6-8pm KURINUKI: Kurinuki is a technique where an object is carved from a solid block of clay. It differs from other techniques as it is reductive rather than additive.

Date: 23 March 2020 Time: Monday 6-8pm SLAB: Slabs are rolled sheets of clay, which can then be cut to size and constructed into 3-dimensional objects. Learn about soft-slabs, hard-slabs and their various applications. This is a great technique to introduce texture!

Date: 30 March 2020 Time: Monday 6-8pm GLAZE + FIRE: Work completed in previous weeks will be bisque fired and ready for glazing. In this class you will learn application techniques, preparing your pieces for firing, and a brief intro to kilns and loading. This step is essential to complete the process and make your pieces functional!
